A Torii gate made using cardboard and paper clay
( 10'6in x 9'8inx 1'5in).
My gate is inspired by a Torii gate made out of actual speakers called "Karaoke Torii" by the artist Benoit Maubrey. While his is made out of a variety of speakers, mine is constructed as a big speaker system housed inside a Torii gate. This motif of music can be seen throughout all of my pieces with the use of headphones. A visual motif of the tool that I use to help combat the hecticness that comes with an overactive mind. Music transcends physical and perceived boundaries and reaches people to their core, inspiring similar thoughts, feelings, and introspection. It is also interesting to consider that Torii gates are used to mark the front of temples and symbolize sacred space, and what better way to introduce people to my thoughts and work than by having them in the sacred space of my mind. Also, our brain is between our temples, just like the entrance to mine is between the temple gate legs.
